Rotary Club of Madras - DISTRICT 3230

Sembakkam

During 1985 – 86, Rtn. K.R. Gopalan added Sembakkam as a major project of the Rotary Club of Madras.  Sembakkam is a small semi – urban locality on the Velachery – Tambaram Road, housing migrant workers or descendants of such migrant workers.

Rotary Club of Madras has initiated many projects at Sembakkam, such as a tailoring course for women, construction of a community hall, medical centre, construction of a water tank and other programmes.

After successful completion of the tailoring course, young women find employment in export garment units located in “Export Promotion Zone” or in the vicinity of Sembakkam.

The Community Hall is rented out for weddings and social events.  From time to time, the Club addresses specific needs of the residents and carries out awareness campaigns to keep Sembakkam clean.
