Rotary Club of Madras - DISTRICT 3230
Rotary Nagar
With the dawn of India’s Independence on 15th August 1947, a new project was launched by Rotary Club of Madras!!
Rotary Nagar, as it is christened today, is a low – income tenement made up of people who work in clearing garbage in the City. Located behind the Queen Mary’s College on Dr. Radhakrishnan Road, Mylapore, Chennai, Rotary Nagar project is an intervention to create awareness of various vocations that may be pursued by the young generation inhabiting the colony.
Through vocational training programmes, mainly aimed at young girls, the project seeks to transform the living conditions of the poor. The Club has built a community hall that acts as the hope & pivot for an entire community of 35,000 people.
For 28 years, a tailoring class has been conducted for young girls of the colony. On successful completion of the tailoring course, the girls choose to work on their own, with sewing machines donated by the Club, or, work in large units manufacturing garments. The Club assists in placement of such girls.
More recently, a beautician’s course is being conducted to train young girls to be employed by salons. The Club has also initiated a computer education programme, with assistance from benefactors or from other Not – for – Profit Organizations.
The Inner Wheel Club of Madras runs a crèche for working women at the Rotary Nagar.
The Rotary Club of Madras conducts a night school for young children, apart from providing a library and police outpost to maintain law and order. The Club has also planted saplings along the narrow roads and has provided clean drinking water. Periodically, awareness campaigns are conducted about health and hygiene. Rotarians volunteer their time during Pulse Polio Immunization Camps to administer polio vaccine to children below 5 years.
