Future Generations
The Council on Legislation, at it’s meeting held on 28th April 2010, has voted for inclusion of “New Generations” as the Fifth Avenue of Service under Rotary. Thus, “Youth Services”, in the previous avatar, is now officially recognized as an Avenue of Service. This recognition underscores Rotary’s focus on the Next Generation!!
Rotary International’s commitment to the future generations manifests in the following manner:
- Interact Clubs
- Rotaract Clubs
- RYLA
- Rotary Youth Exchange
INTERACT is an acronym for INTERNATIONAL ACTION at the school level. Interact is Rotary International’s service club for children between ages 12 and 18. Interact Clubs are self governed and self supporting, sponsored by Rotary Clubs, which provide guidance.
Members of Interact Clubs inculcate, at an early age, a sense of respect for elders, responsibility, nurturing leadership skills, promoting international understanding and appreciating hard work.
ROTARACT is Rotary Sponsored Club for young men and women in the age group of 18 to 30. The Clubs may be part of a college, university or community based clubs.
Rotaractors are partners in Service. They support community service initiatives of Rotary Clubs and also undertake projects of their own.
Rotary Club of Madras is proud to have Rtr. Suresh as District Rotaract Representative for the year 2010 – 11.
Rotaractors assist in conducting RYLA and also are potential candidates for Membership of Rotary Clubs.
RYLA:
Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) is Rotary’s training programme for young people.
Through RYLA, Rotary Clubs provide youth between 14 and 30 an opportunity to mould themselves as future leaders. RYLA is a powerful platform to groom the youth of today, as leaders of the future.
RYLA is Rotary’s commitment to young people and acknowledging their role in community service.

Sports
Members of the Rotary Club of Madras are passionately involved in Bridge, Tennis, Badminton and Golf!!
At the District Level, Rotary Club of Madras has always won laurels in Tennis, bridge and other games. The Club’s Members participate in Paul Harris Cricket Carnival, annually conducted by Rotary Club of Madras East.
Sports activities for Members, Anns and Annets are also held. Such sports activities promote fellowship and bonhomie. Of course, hidden talents come to the fore too!!!
Annually, a Cricket Tournament in the T 20 format is held between Madras Cricket Club (MCC) and Rotary Club of Madras. Played at the hallowed Chepauk Grounds, MCC and RCM battle it out for the Phadke Trophy, instituted by Late Rtn. Ram Phadke in memory of his dear father.
Over the years, legend has it that late Rtn. Ram Phadke stood as a “neutral umpire” at the Pavilion End. Stories abound about Ram’s “impartial” umpiring that has motivated cricket enthusiasts from MCC and RCM to participate in large numbers. It is believed that Ram ensured that MCC and RCM won the trophy in rotation, year after year!!! Now, that is “impartial” umpiring!!!
The Phadke Trophy match is followed by beer and lunch, hosted graciously by MCC.
We sorely miss Ram.
