Rotary Club of Madras - DISTRICT 3230
Dandiya Raas
Dandiya Raas is a traditional dance form of Gujarat, brought to Chennai in all it’s splendour by Rtn. PP. Satyan Bhat and his charming Ann, Parul.
During September/October, “Navrathri” Festival is celebrated across India. Dandiya Raas is performed during all the nine days of this colourful festival.
Pulsating music of the “Dhol”, “Dholak” or “Tabla”, women in traditional bandini ghagras & cholis, men in typical Gujarthi style Turbans & “Kedias” and dancers raring to go!! This is the typical scene at the Club’s first fund raiser every year!!
Members and their families turn up in large numbers to dance through the evening. Forming a large circle, dandiyas (traditional sticks) in hand, dancers exude energy and move in a choreographed manner to the captivating music.
Professional dancers take time to get Members into the groove by explaining the dance steps patiently. The banquet hall presents a colourful picture, with high levels of energy.
Through the Dandiya Raas, funds are raised for ongoing community service projects. Sponsors come forward to contribute handsomely to this event, which is enthusiastically welcomed by our Members.
A slice of Gujarat is transported to Chennai, with authentic cuisine fit for Royalty of erstwhile Kingdoms of Gujarat!!! Dhoklas, Daal Roti, Kadhi, chaas, pickles and an array of vegetables! If you had thoughts of losing weight, we suggest you postpone the attempt!!!
Year after year, Rtn. Satyan and Ann Parul, bring the Navrathri Festivities to life with their meticulous planning and execution. The growing number of dancers from our Club is testimony to the popularity of Dandiya Raas.
