Inner Wheel

The Inner Wheel Club of Madras came into existence in 1966. The inaugural meeting was held on 3rd Feb 1966 and the Club was chartered on 10th March 1966. It is one of the largest and oldest clubs in India. Members of Inner Wheel Club of Madras are wives of Rotarians. There are nearly 700 Inner Wheel Clubs in India. Inner Wheel Club of Madras has 84 members. From its inception, the club has been engaged in serving the underprivileged and those who need help.

The Inner Wheel Club of Madras is fortunate to have International Inner Wheel Editor Kamala Ramakrishnan and two Past Association Presidents Mano Baktavatsalam and Lily Rathnam as its members. Past District Chairman Rama Rajagopalan is also a member of this Prestigious Club.

The Club undertakes several projects every year, but five projects are ongoing ones.

1. Creche at Rotary Nagar:-

Started in 1979, this crèche looks after 35-45 children on any given day. The children are provided nutritious meals and medical care. They are looked after by a teacher and an ayah.

2. NKT School Tailoring Unit:-

Probably the oldest on-going project. Students of NKT School and neighbouring areas learn tailoring and some take it up as vocation.

3. Scholarships:-
Twice a year, in July & February about 22 children are given scholarships ranging from Rs. 1200 – 2000 to pay their school fees and buy books.

4. Medicines for Cancer patients:-

Rs. 10,000 a year is donated to The Cancer ward of Egmore Childrens Hospital to buy medicines and health sustaining nutritious supplements for the children. The number varies from 50 -100 at any given time.

5. B.K. Home:-
The jewel in the crown is Barbara Kelly Home. Started in 1993-94, jointly with International Childrens’ Trust, U.K. based NGO, this home currently houses 24 girls ranging from 5 years to 16 years in age. Initially the home was in a rented house, but in 1999, it was moved to the Club’s own premises in Sholinganallur. The children are studying in Ellen Sharma School, Children Garden School and Corporation School depending upon the language chosen for medium of instruction.

The Home is managed by a Barbara Kelly Home Committee. All Presidents and Chairman of the Home Committee put in a lot of effort and care. Together they have lovingly shaped the home into what it is today; a home full of laughter, enthusiasm, happiness and good health.

For day to day running of the Home, there is a cook, a maid, a watchman and a teacher-cum-housemother. Members of IWC Madras take an active interest in the home. Music & dance, computers and tailoring are also taught to the girls.

Two of our students have passed class X this year. Last year’s Class X student Saraswati scored 450/500 marks and wants to become an IAS Officer. The Club is supporting her right thorough. Another student Amudha has completed Nurses Assistant Training Course at YWCA with the club’s help.

This year the Club completed many projects like rainwater harvesting, digging a well, donating 3 computers to Corporation School and paying for 5 cataract surgeries for 5 underprivileged patients. The co sponsorship of dance drama Silapadhigaram was the Charter Day project dedicated to our Past Presidents. 1500 underprivileged children, mentally challenged, physically challenged and visually challenged children and senior citizens from Homes saw the play and appreciated the musical dance drama by Cleveland Cultural Alliance. A young student injured in an accident was given Rs. 25,000/- for urothoplasty. ....................................................................
